Set the Night Singing #2.20

Updated: Oct 14

To the child's mind –

words:

concrete things.

The storybook:

paper, some color, and wings!

New speech in the mouth –

dense as belly-warm food.

New words, I taste, and

New concepts, I chew.

And words and words spoken:

puck spells they must be!

For “milk milk,” I utter,

and milk milk I see.

But, baby –

you dear thing,

you one day shall feel

these simple concoctions

can cut skin like steel.

Babe –

as by djinn charms,

your sweet lips unseal –

with wisdom, bear chary

this tongue that you wield.
